Word Origin & Etymology
Named after the Yellowstone River. The river's name originates from the Minnetaree (Hidatsa) Indigenous name 'Mi tsi a-da-zi' (Rock Yellow River), which French-Canadian trappers translated to 'Roche Jaune' and American explorers subsequently anglicized to 'Yellow Stone'.
